The competition in the mid-size SUV segment has intensified as Citroën launches its latest offering, the Basalt SUV, priced aggressively at ₹7.99 lakh (ex-showroom), significantly undercutting the Tata Curvv, which starts at ₹10.99 lakh. With a robust set of features and a powerful engine lineup, Citroën’s Basalt is poised to challenge Tata Motors’ dominance in the market.

    Tata Curvv Set the Benchmark

Tata Motors shook the SUV market with the introduction of the Curvv, offering features that are often seen in the top-end models of other cars, even in its base variant. Priced at ₹10.99 lakh for the base model, the Curvv raised the bar in the mid-size SUV segment, leaving competitors trailing. Auto experts predicted that no other vehicle in this segment could rival Tata’s Curvv in terms of value for money and features.

However, Citroën has now entered the fray with the Basalt SUV, looking to disrupt Tata’s monopoly in the segment with a more affordable alternative packed with features.

Citroën Basalt – A Game Changer in the SUV Market

Citroën’s Basalt SUV, launched at the end of August, is the company’s fifth model in India, and it has been priced at ₹7.99 lakh, making it ₹3 lakh cheaper than the base variant of the Tata Curvv. Despite the lower price, the Basalt doesn’t compromise on essential features, positioning itself as a strong contender in the mid-size SUV market.

    Engine Options and Performance

The Citroën Basalt offers two engine choices:

    1. 1.2-Liter Naturally Aspirated Petrol Engine: This engine generates 80 bhp of power and 115 Nm of torque, coupled with a 5-speed manual gearbox. It is perfect for those looking for a reliable, fuel-efficient SUV for city driving.
    2. 1.2-Liter Turbocharged Petrol Engine: The more powerful option, this 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine delivers 109 bhp and 190 Nm of torque with a 6-speed manual gearbox. For those opting for an automatic transmission, the torque converter variant offers a higher torque output of 205 Nm, making it a more potent choice for highway driving and long journeys.

In terms of fuel efficiency, the Basalt is quite competitive. Citroën claims a mileage of 18 km per litre for the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated variant, while the 1.2-litre turbo petrol manual delivers 19.5 km per litre. The turbo petrol automatic offers 18.7 km per litre, appealing to a range of drivers seeking both performance and economy.

    Feature-Rich Interior and Comfort

Citroën has ensured that the Basalt delivers a premium experience with its well-equipped interior. Key features include:

    • LED Projector Headlamps: Offering better visibility and a modern look.
    • 16-inch Alloy Wheels: Adding to the SUV’s sporty design.
    • Wraparound Tail Lamps: Enhancing the rear design aesthetics.
    • Rear AC Vents: Providing comfort to passengers in the second row, especially during long journeys.
    • Adjustable Thigh Support for Rear Passengers: A feature often missing in this segment, ensuring better comfort.
    • 10.25-inch Touchscreen Infotainment System: Comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, providing seamless connectivity.
    • Automatic Climate Control: Maintaining an optimal cabin temperature for maximum comfort.

With these features, Citroën has ensured that the Basalt stands out in the mid-size SUV market, offering a blend of style, comfort, and technology.

    Safety First – Comprehensive Features

Citroën has equipped the Basalt with an impressive range of safety features that come as standard, including:

    • Six Airbags: Ensuring maximum safety for all occupants.
    • Electronic Stability Control (ESC): Providing better control in challenging driving conditions.
    • Rear Parking Camera and Sensors: Assisting drivers with parking in tight spaces.
    • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS): Helping drivers monitor tire pressure for optimal performance and safety.

    Colour Options and Design Appeal

The Citroën Basalt is available in a range of attractive colours to suit different tastes:

    • Monotone Colours: Polar White, Steel Grey, Platinum Grey, Cosmo Blue, and Garnet Red.
    • Dual-tone Options: Polar White with a Grey Roof and Garnet Red with a Black Roof.

These colour combinations enhance the sporty and dynamic appeal of the Basalt, ensuring it stands out on the road.

A Strong Contender in the SUV Segment

With a competitive price point, multiple engine options, and a comprehensive list of features, the Citroën Basalt is set to give tough competition to Tata Curvv. While Tata’s Curvv still remains a powerful offering with its extensive feature set, the Basalt’s aggressive pricing and robust feature list make it a viable alternative for those seeking value for money without compromising on quality or performance.
