Overview
The 2022 Toyota RAV4 may not be the most entertaining compact SUV from a driver’s standpoint, but its practicality and efficiency make it an Editor’s Choice choice. This entry-level model is affordable but very basic, but mid-range trims offer plenty of features that buyers in this segment will appreciate. An eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard. Although all-wheel drive is available, you won’t see even the most rugged model sitting at the trailhead with a 4Runner or Tacoma. A number of driver-assistance features are standard in the RAV4, including adaptive cruise control. Those who want even more efficiency can choose a RAV4 Hybrid, which is reviewed separately. Upmarket trims come with luxurious features such as faux-leather upholstery, heated seats, and a JBL stereo system.
First deliveries of the Toyota RAV4 line-up in 2022 are expected to begin in the first quarter, with the top-selling range to gain more variants as well as hybrid technology being made available.
For the RAV4 GX 2WD, prices start at $34,400 before on-road costs, and for the RAV4 Edge AWD Hybrid, prices start at $52,700 before on-road costs.
All trim levels of the RAV4 will now feature hybrid power, including the top-spec Edge AWD, which will also offer a petrol-electric drivetrain, and a new XSE grade which offers both 2WD and AWD hybrid powertrains.
In addition, current GX, GXL, Cruiser and Edge models will receive a range of equipment and aesthetic enhancements for 2022. The base GX manual will be dropped due to a lack of customer demand.
For 2022, prices are slightly lower for GX grades while they’re a little higher for GXL, Cruiser, and Edge grades.

2022 Toyota RAV4: Engines
RAV4 petrol 2WD models are powered by a 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine developing 127kW at 6600rpm and 203Nm at 4400-4900rpm, driving the wheels through a CVT automatic transmission.
As for the new model year, the outgoing model will no longer offer a six-speed manual transmission for lower grades, while all petrol models will feature idle stop/start to enhance fuel efficiency.
In the 2WD Hybrid models, a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated petrol engine is paired with an electric motor and battery pack for 160kW of power.
AWD Hybrids feature an extra e-motor on the rear axle, increasing maximum power to 163kW, as well as a Trail mode that changes throttle, wheel braking, and torque distribution to enhance traction on low-grip surfaces.
In addition, the Edge AWD petrol has a 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine teamed with an eight-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive generating 152kW (6600rpm) and 243Nm (4000-5000rpm).
