The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been a huge success in India, and the fifth-generation model has now arrived. This is a massive improvement for the luxury car, as Mercedes-Benz has moved it forward in terms of premium-ness and technology. The 2022 model was released with three powertrain options, and we evaluated the top-of-the-line C300d.

    Exterior

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class looks elegant, well-rounded, and stunning. The big gaping grille with the three-pointed stars in the center dominates the front and brings the car a lot of presence. The curving lines on the profile make it look pretty graceful, and the 17-inch wheels on the Avantgarde variant are quite beautiful. This car’s optimal angle is the rear three-quarter rear angle. Also, the teardrop-shaped split LED tail lamps are stunning, and the new C-Class has an athletic aspect thanks to the coupe-like sloping roofline. The rear bumper is beautifully designed as well, with the artificial diffuser reducing visual mass.

The C300d is available in AMG-line trim, which adds a touch of sportiness to the entire look. It has a more assertive front and front bumper, flaring side sills, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class is built on the same MRA II architecture as the S-Class. When compared to its earlier versions, it is 65mm longer, 10mm wider, and has a 25mm larger wheelbase, which translates to extra rear room. Ground clearance has also been improved by 7mm.

    Interior

If the exterior looks a little too simple to you, don’t leave the store just yet; the cabin is the true appeal. The W206 Mercedes C-Class is unabashedly ‘influenced’ by the new S-Class, with a similar design central console and the 11.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system taking centre stage. The entire design is spectacular and so wonderfully executed that the cabin of the C-Class has a sense of significance that no other car at this price point has.

The layered dash design appears elegant due to the use of wood, and the air-conditioning vents, which are influenced by fighter-jet afterburners, are not only wonderfully designed, but the way they perform with pleasant clicks every time you move them indicates how perfectly manufactured they are. The C300d AMG-Line also includes laser LED headlights, wider 18-inch alloy wheels, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and a Burmester sound system. Basic ADAS features (active braking assist), six airbags, ESP, and other safety measures are included.

    Price

    The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Ex-Showroom pricing ranges from 55 to 61 lakh. and the C 200 On-Road pricing is 63.9 Lakh*. The top variant of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class On-Road costs 70.88 Lakh*. Mercedes-Benz offers three C-Class models.

    VariantEx-ShowroomSpecifications
    C-Class C 200₹55 LakhPetrol, automatic, 16.9 km/l, 1496 CC
    C-Class C 220d₹56 LakhDiesel, automatic, 23 km/l, 1993 CC
    C-Class C 300₹61 LakhDiesel, automatic, 20.4 km/l, 1993 CC

    Performance

The new C-Class is available with three engine options. The C300d is the most advanced, having a 265 PS 2.0 diesel engine, while the C220d has the same capacity diesel engine but produces a more sedate 200 PS. The C200, which is operated by a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine and produces an amazing 204 PS, will be the most inexpensive model in the lineup. All of these engines feature mild-hybrid technology, with the 48-volt system capable of producing up to 20PS and 200Nm of torque for additional punch at lower revs.

The modest displacement of the petrol engine, as well as the 9-speed automatic transmission, are both to a fault. It’s a smooth-shifting car, without a doubt, but there’s a break at the throttle pedal as the engine and gearbox stop briefly before giving power. The gear shifts are also a little slow, which detracts from the fun part.

    Boot Space

The boot of the new C-Class is spacious, and the opening is enough. However, there is no room to store the space-saving spare tyre, which takes up a significant amount of boot space. So, if you want to transport a lot of goods, you must leave the spare tire at home, which may be risky.

    Ride and Handling

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class’s setup provides the true feel of luxury. The C-Class simply thrives at town speeds because of its smooth low-speed ride. This German vehicle feels flexible yet controlled thanks to well-judged spring rates. Even on the rutted ground, the suspension provides remarkably effective crash-free bump absorption, and most irregularities are not felt. At low speeds, there is some stiffness, but not to the point of being uncomfortable. Even at greater speeds, the C-Class maintains its composure, making it a pleasant highway companion.

In terms of handling, the C-Class is safe, reliable, and enjoyable. Even though pushed hard, it feels secure, and the chassis feels quick to shift direction, making the C-Class rather fun to drive. If the new C-Class had a more powerful engine, the car’s fun-to-drive factor would have been substantially higher.

    Final Verdict

The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class improves on the previous model’s qualities to create a powerful package. It is bigger and better in nearly every sense, as the new car seems more upscale, spacious, and well-equipped. The C-Class is an easy-to-drive car that is entertaining to drive around corners, but enthusiasts will find the petrol engine to be a bummer. The modest 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine provides more than enough power for everyday driving but isn’t exactly exciting in terms of raw performance. But, if you’re going to be driven and just sometimes take the wheel, the C200 checks all the boxes. It’s an excellent choice for daily driving, with all the bells and whistles to treat its owners.
