Lok Adalat for Traffic Challans: Key Details and Procedure

Lok Adalat serves as a special court aimed at resolving minor disputes and cases, including traffic challans. This process provides an opportunity to settle traffic violation cases through a compromise, potentially reducing the fine or closing the case based on an agreement. However, it’s important to note that this is not a pardon but a settlement mechanism.

    Upcoming National Lok Adalat

The next National Lok Adalat is scheduled for September 14, 2024. If you have long-pending traffic challans, this is an opportunity to resolve them. Challans will be settled in the Lok Adalat of the district where the violation occurred. Missing this opportunity means you’ll have to address the challan through a virtual court or other means.

Eligibility for Traffic Challan Settlement in Lok Adalat

    1. Minor Violations: Cases involving minor traffic rule violations such as not wearing a seatbelt, not wearing a helmet, or jumping a red light can be settled in Lok Adalat.
    2. Non-Serious Offenses: If the challan pertains to general traffic rule violations without serious offenses or accidents, it is more likely to be settled.
    3. Attendance Requirement: You must be present at the Lok Adalat on the designated day. Both the traffic police and a judicial officer will address the case based on a compromise.

Procedure for Settlement in Lok Adalat

    1. Receipt of Summons/Notice: Individuals with pending traffic challans receive a summons or notice from Lok Adalat, specifying the date and time.
    2. Attendance: On the scheduled date, appear at the Lok Adalat where your case will be heard in the presence of a judge and traffic officer.
    3. Compromise and Penalty: The judge and officer will review the case and determine the fine based on an agreement, often providing a discount.
    4. Payment of Fines: The agreed-upon fine is paid directly at the court, concluding the challan matter.

    Required Documents for Lok Adalat

To effectively address your traffic challan, ensure you bring the following documents:

    • Copy of Challan: Bring the original or a printed copy of the traffic challan, detailing the challan number, date, and fine amount.
    • Vehicle Documents: Carry the vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC) to verify ownership or association with the vehicle.
    • Driving License: Present your valid driving license to prove authorization to drive.
    • ID Proof: Provide an Aadhaar card, PAN card, passport, or other valid identification for identity verification.
    • Previous Challan Information: Keep information on any prior or pending challans to provide a complete picture of your case.
    • Court Notice/Summons: Bring the summons or notice from the court confirming your attendance at Lok Adalat.
    • Vehicle Insurance: If relevant, include the vehicle’s insurance document, especially if the challan involves an accident or insurance matter.
